Florence James Sweeney, one of the best known and most highly esteemed citizens of the First Ward died at 7:30 o'clock this morning at St. Eliz. hospital. He was taken sick seven weeks ago and from the first his illness was of a serious nature. Six weeks ago he was removed from his home, 617 Wabash Ave, to St. Eliz. hospital and ten days ago he submitted to a surgical operation. The shock attending the operation affected his heart and complications set in and caused his death. Mr. Sweeney was born in County Cork, Ireland and came tot he US when a young man. He lived at Crawfordsville for a long time and was married to Miss Catherine Mahoney in that city. 25 years ago he came to this city and had lived here since. His entire life was spent in railroad work. He was employed by the Lake Erie & Western road for many yeas. For a number of years he was flagman at the Smith St. crossing of the Big 4 and Lake Erie roads. He was a man of high ideals was at all times pleasing in his manner and was admired by all who knew him. Mr. S. was a devout member of St. Ann's Church and was greatly devoted to his family. He was a charter member of the Catholic Knights of America and was also affiliated with the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He is survived by a widow and two daughters: Misses Jennie F. and Kittie L. Sweeney. The funeral will be held at 9 o'clock Friday morning from St Ann's Church and the burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.  -- contributed
